About Rieger

Giuseppe Rieger was an artist born in Vienna in 1812, but he spent most of his life in Trieste. In 40's of 19. centuary he traced scenic look of shore from Trieste to Pula, which was published in 1845. as "Costa occidentale dell' Istria", and 1850. he pictured coastline from cape Kumpar (in front of entrance to Pula sea-port) to Budva. That is how the panoramas of Dalmatia "Panorama della Costa e dell Isole di Dalmazia nei viaggi dei Piroscafi del Lloyd Austriaco" got printed.

Lloyds steamships were maintaining the line from Trieste to Kotor. After pula the line lead to Mali Lošinj - Zadar - Šibenik - Split - Hvar - Korčulu - Dubrovnik - Herceg Novi - Kotor, so landscapes and mentioned ports were shown on Riegers panoramas. They could be used in practical navigation, but the motive of their formation was turistic advertisement of our wonderful coast.

Reprint of Riegers panoramas from 1853., which is kept in Historical and Maritime Museum of the Croatian Littoral in Rijeka, was published by Croatian Hydrographic Institute in Split in book of Mithad Kozličić "Panorame Dalmacije Giusepepea Riegera" in 2003..
